Gr8tfull (fur Catz)

Here’s the thing…there was a time when I too didn’t understand the draw of cats. I grew up with dogs, and for 22 years of my life, I proudly proclaimed myself a dog person.

But then it happened.

My then boyfriend gave me a VERY ill-advised birthday gift. A little gray kitten. She came from a shelter in San Antonio, TX, and her name was Isabel. What was I – a dog person who had never proclaimed any interest in cats – to do with this creature? I worked 10-to-12-hour days for a PGA Tour golf tournament. My lease didn’t allow pets. It was too late to return her to the animal shelter that evening, so I decided to do it in the morning. Isabel would stay with me that night.

And then it happened.

When I laid down to go to sleep that night, Isabel – or Izzy as she would later come to be called – jumped up on my bed, curled up next to me and started purring. I think it took me about 30 seconds to fall in love. Izzy far outlasted her gifter and stayed with me for the next 19 years, until I had to put her down last year. She remains one of the true loves of my life.

Every cat person has a story like this. Cats may not be man’s best friend. They may not be universally beloved. But for those of us who love them, we’re grateful they purred their way into our lives.

And so – in this season of gratitude – I give you, together with a few of the cat people of CSG, 10 reasons to be thankful fur our feline friends this November.

Daniela’s Reasons

  • Cats have a bad rap as cold and aloof, but they will immediately sense when you're feeling like shit and come comfort you by cuddles or making biscuits.

  • Most days cats are better company than humans. All mellow, no drama.

Tatiana’s Reasons

  • They provide lots of entertainment during the day, even reminding me to take breaks from work when they’d like to play or want some pets and attention.

  • There is nothing quite like enjoying an evening watching movies with an adorable kitty purring at your side.

 Kris’ Reasons

  • From the day I brought him home, Moscow has been the brightest, most joyful part of my life. He was certainly raised by me, with his stand-offish, nervous to trust people, socially awkward personality. We are two peas in a pod, taking on life together. Being a cat mom has made me a more patient person, and a bit more snuggly than I ever expected to be.

 Shannon’s Reasons

  • They can make themselves smol enough to fit in the cutest – and sometimes weirdest – places. Got a tiny box? Your cat will go in it. A two-inch passageway to navigate between pieces of furniture? Please. They got it.

  • The internet content. No internet content will ever top cat content. Ever.

  • They keep it real. Cats have no time for your bullshit. Put something on a table where they don’t think it should go? They’ll move it. Anger them? They’ll puke on your bed.

  • They are fuzzy wittle cuddle buddies. And even though they may glare at you when you sing songs about how they’re a cat-shaped little man (sorry, Luka), they’ll still curl up next to you in a little fuzzy ball when you need it most.
